Phil Waud Wild Camping

Route I parked in Edale and walked Grindslow, following the packhorse route. I didn't go right to the top, I walked in front of Grindslow and joined the edge path.  I met up with Steve and Simon, and we followed the ancient trail across from Crowden Clough up to Rabbit Rock. Weather The weather was dry, small gusts of wind and temperatures of about ten Degrees. Overnight, the slight wind dropped to virtually nothing. Equipment I fitted some new guylines to the Lanshan, they worked very well but need shortening. I used the clips that I normally put on the doors to clip the inner to the pokes, this cut down the flappiness a lot. I used the wildside adventures set up, tried several times to light the stove, but had to go back to the carbon Speedster stove. I tried to go cup and plate free, but I'm not impressed.  Route We parked at Barber Booth car park, it's now a pay and display car park, you use the RingGo app and location code 51703 - however there was no phone signal but the cashless machine managed to take a payment via a card. We walked up the valley, broadly following the route of the river Noe, and joining the Pennine Way. The camp was on the side of the river at the base of Jacob's Ladder. Even though the site looks good, we couldn't find a level pitch and both Lanshan's gave their owners an awful nights sleep sliding off the airbed. Weather The forecast was for clear skies and low wind, which was exactly what we got! The temperature hit -1 during the evening, which was about 3 degrees inside the tent. In the morning there was a thick of ftost on one side of the tent, and the water on the roads had frozen. Route We parked in Curbar Edge car park for an easy walk up to the edge. The car park has good wi fi reception and you can use the Pay by Phone app with the location code 807041. You arent suppose to park overnight but I paid £6.30 to cover us to the end of the day. I did get a reminder at midnight that the parking was running out, and offering to extend it, but annoyingly I left it until it had actually run out and had to pay a fresh £6.30. Lesson learned! The route up is pretty straightforward. Leave the car park and follow the signs past an walled field enclosure system, on a fairly steep but short, well paved set of steps and then along the well trodden path to the trig point. We spotted some rocks just off from the path and soon had our tents pitched. Weather The forecast was for a pretty cold evening with temperatures down to zero but a windchill of below -5.
